US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman is warning against signs that Russian President Vladimir Putin may use tactical nuclear weapons in a “controlled” escalation of the Ukraine war, he wrote. Sky News.
Sherman spoke yesterday at the opening of NATO’s annual conference on arms control, which is being held in the United States this year for the first time since 2004.
– It is very important for us to be aware of this matter, stresses the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Putin announced last month that Russia intends to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. In Sherman’s view, this is precisely an example of a president “trying to use the threat in a controlled manner.”
Tactical nuclear weapons are used on the battlefield and/or against limited military targets – unlike warheads that are designed to kill as many people as possible and cause as much physical destruction as possible.
Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. Putin has previously denied having plans to use such means in the conflict in Ukraine.
